The Hidden Challenge After Pelvic Organ Prolapse Surgery: UTIs

Pelvic organ prolapse surgery can lead to urinary tract infections — a common post-surgical complication patients should understand.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP)

Pelvic organ prolapse is a condition where weakened muscles and tissues in the pelvic area cause organs such as the bladder or uterus to press against the vaginal wall. Many women undergo surgery to treat this condition and reclaim their quality of life. While these procedures often provide relief, they can lead to unexpected post-surgical complications such as urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Why Do UTIs Occur After POP Surgery?

The development of UTI following POP surgery is a known risk. Contributing factors include:

  • Injury to urinary tract tissues — fine tissues may be injured during surgery, weakening the body's defensive barrier against bacteria.
  • Use of indwelling catheters — after surgery, most patients need a catheter. These devices can be routes for bacteria to enter the urinary tract.
  • Weakened local defenses — antibiotics used during surgery may interfere with normal flora, creating an environment where pathogenic bacteria can multiply.

Recognizing the Symptoms of a UTI

Post-surgical patients should watch for:

  • A burning sensation during urination
  • Frequent urination with little output
  • Cloudy or foul-smelling urine
  • Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Fever or chills (a sign of more serious infection)

Strategies to Prevent UTIs After Surgery

  • Hydration is key — drink plenty of water (8–10 glasses daily, unless your physician advises otherwise) to flush bacteria from the urinary system.
  • Practice good catheter care — wash hands before touching the catheter; regular cleaning and timely removal minimize bacterial colonization.
  • Monitor for symptoms — periodic check-ups with your provider help identify infection early.

The Road to Recovery

Surgical procedures for pelvic organ prolapse bring significant improvement to many women's lives. Understanding related complications — including UTIs — is crucial for a successful recovery. By guarding against risk factors and staying informed, women can better navigate their recovery journey.
